Catheter - A catheter is a tube that is
inserted into a body cavity. Most are
soft and flexible and made of latex.
They allow drainage or injection of
fluids. Placement of a catheter in a
body part may allow urine to drain
from the bladder. It may also allow
the administration of iv drugs.
The urinary catheter is held in place
by a balloon. The balloon is filld with
sterile water to help hold it in place.
A catheter can be used for a number
of reasons that include, but are not limited
to collection of a sterile urine specimen,
and obstruction of the urethra.
