Pacifier
Pacifier - A pacifieris a nipple shaped device
made of rubber, plastic or silicone given to
an infant to soothe and calm . Sometimes it
also used to try enduce sleep in the child.
Pacifiers were first used in the America in
the 1900's, patented as a 'baby comforter'.
In some countries they are also called
dummies or soothers. They have a standard
appearance consisting of a teat, mouth sheild
and a handle. The teat can be made with a
hard or soft plastic. In England they were said
to have been used by "poor people", said to be
associated with poor hygeine.
Pacifiers were developed from harder teething
rings. In the 1800's, babies born to wealthy
families were given actual silver 'soothers',
hence the term "born with a silverspoon in
his mouth". Doctors have cited the pacifier
as causing dental problems and causing recurring
ear infections. On the other hand, researchers
have found evidence that use of a pacifier may
possibly reduce the risk of sids.
