How long does it take to completely get over a cold?

The reason I ask is because, two Thursdays ago, I was dragged to a "friend's" house, even though he was sick with a cold. I'd insisted to my other "friend" that we shouldn't go, but he insisted that we come down, citing, "He's feeling better, what could it hurt?"
I tried my best not to contract the cold from him, but the following day, I began coughing and sneezing.
I've had this cold for over a week (it's gotten better, but I still have a slight cough and the sniffles), and I'm wondering how long it should generally take for me to be 100%.
My "friend" (the one without the cold) claims "I'll never be 100%" and that I'll "have this cold for another three weeks", but I don't really trust his opinion, so I wanted others to weigh in on this subject.
I've been taking cough syrup and cold medication, but I'm still not completely better.
Any suggestions or thoughts?
Thanks for all of your help, it's truly appreciated.
