(part 2) Time passed unnoticed, each block placement a small victory, and each tower constructed a testament to his ability to create and enjoy. The world outside faded away, leaving only the quiet hum of the room and the occasional clink of plastic blocks.
Suddenly, John felt a familiar twinge, an urgent need that demanded attention. His brow furrowed in confusion, his hands pausing mid-block. “Um, Brenda?”
“Yes, John?” she responded, her voice still gentle and reassuring.
“I… I think I need to use the bathroom,” he confessed, his cheeks flushing with embarrassment.
Brenda nodded understandingly. “It’s perfectly normal to have those needs, especially in this state of mind. Would you like to go to the bathroom, or would you prefer to handle it here?”
John hesitated, torn between the privacy of the bathroom and the comfort of remaining in the safe environment of the playroom. “I… I’m not sure.”
“Take your time, John,” Brenda encouraged, maintaining a supportive presence. “There’s no rush.”
As he wrestled with his decision, John’s gaze drifted back to the diapers laid out on the table. The thought of using the bathroom felt like a step back into his adult world, while staying here, in this protected space, felt like embracing the simplicity and innocence of his younger self.
With a deep breath, John made his choice. “I think… I think I’d rather stay here.”
Brenda nodded, her expression compassionate. “Alright, John. Let’s take care of that for you, then.”
She guided him to a comfortable spot on the floor, her movements efficient yet tender. John closed his eyes, focusing on being cared for and this most basic need met without judgment. It was a strange and intimate act, but somehow, it felt right, a crucial part of his journey toward healing and acceptance.
As Brenda tended to him, John felt a wave of relief wash over him, not just from the physical release but also from the emotional one. For the first time in a long while, he felt seen and understood, his vulnerabilities acknowledged and respected.
“All done,” Brenda announced softly, helping him clean up and redress. “How do you feel now, John?”
“Relieved,” he admitted, opening his eyes to meet her gaze. “Both physically and… emotionally.”
“That’s wonderful to hear,” Brenda smiled, gathering the supplies in the bag. “Why don’t we continue playing for a little while longer? There’s no rush to leave just yet.”
John nodded, his spirits lifted by the simple act of acceptance and care. He returned to his building blocks, stacking and knocking down towers with renewed vigor, each action symbolizing his growing confidence and resilience.
As the afternoon wore on, John became increasingly immersed in his play, his earlier hesitations fading into the background. The room filled with the sounds of laughter and clattering blocks, a sanctuary where he could be himself, free from the burdens of adulthood.
Brenda watched him with a satisfied smile, knowing they were on the right path. This was just the beginning of John’s journey, but it was a promising start filled with hope and the promise of healing.
